Mailchimp, an integration partner you can turn on within SilkStart, published an excellent post that we feel offers the most comprehensive overview of what spam is and how you can prevent your messages from being flagged as spam. The main sections of the Mailchimp article that can be found here are:
- What is Spam?
- Spam laws including CANSPAM
- Spam filters
- Tips and best practices
We’ve also added some Best Practices below to provide a concise set of tips to ensure optimal email deliverability.
Best Practices:
- Avoid non-corporate ‘from’ email addresses. Email filters are more likely to flag emails from non-corporate email addresses (e.g. @gmail.com @yahoo.com) as opposed to corporate addresses like @silkstart.com. As a result, we have implemented measures to ensure all messages to your members are delivered from a corporate email address, while replies still forward to your personal, non-corporate email. You can learn more about that here.
- Use [merge tags] to include people's names in your campaigns. Merge tags allow you to add every recipient's personal name to the email they receive. You can learn more about these here.
- Avoid inadvertent code snippets in campaigns. Spam filters can be triggered by hidden formatting code that is attached to text pasted directly from sources like Microsoft word. We recommend writing your emails directly into the editor or copying text into Notes (Mac) or TextPad (PC), converting to plain text, and then copying and pasting again from there into your Email Campaign. In Google Chrome, use Command+Shift+V (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+V (PC) as a shortcut to paste your content as plain text.
- Don’t hide the unsubscribe/opt-out link in your campaigns. SilkStart email campaigns contain a footer section that includes an address (that also helps with deliverability) and an unsubscribe link. We make this section a requirement so that recipients can easily choose to unsubscribe from your emails.
